The Bronx Series created from 2008-2011, some while George was a fellow at the Vermont Studio. Is a heartfelt and bitter sweet, masterfully created, mind’s eye view, documenting the life Schulman and its community live. Passionately intended to give a voice to its people and their place in time.

This Series includes 3 Large Paintings in Acrylic on Canvas and 30+ Collages, painted with Acrylics, some with 24 kt gold leaf, on coffee bags, including diptychs and triptychs on a base of handmade wood panels by Schulman, a professional canvas stretcher.

Schulman lived in the Bronx during its West Side Story renaissance, once predominantly Jewish and Italian, as the next generation moved out, needing large apartments to raise family and ease of transportation Blacks and Hispanics now dominated the neighborhood. Never restricted by his Grandparents, Schulman was free to roam where ever he wanted to go.

The Bronx Series is a homage to the neighborhood people, fragrances and flavors he and his beloved baby twin sisters embraced.  Street Gangs now dominated the Street Thugs Schulman knew too well. To satisfy his disappointed father, raging hormones and let off some steam, Schulman boxed middle weight never losing a fight. An athletic scholarship a Virginia College wouldn’t last a year, back on track to School of Visual Arts for his BFA.

Schulman’s deep roots in the Bronx ended suddenly over a months’ time in December 2015. Beloved twin Sisters, 7 years his junior, who Schulman spent a lifetime trying to protect, never left the Bronx, changed their religion to Christianity, married Hispanics and had children. Sickly as children, grew up to be good looking and smart, but always in trouble. Preferring to live together after losing a husband, they lived with a daughter back in their Parents Concourse rent stabilized apartment.

Complications from life choices they both became terminally ill. Dying only 8 days apart, Schulman never imagined losing them and their family apartment to never divorced husband and daughter whom had no relationship, forever lost. The Bronx chain Schulman lived, loathed and loved lost forever, only memories, faded photographs and the Bronx Series remain.
